DGF Donates $28,000 wheelchair at Carolinas Rehabilitation – Northeast Grand Opening

CONCORD, N.C. – The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of its donors and supporters, donated a $28,000 custom power wheelchair to Crystal Sharar of Charlotte, N.C.  at the grand opening of the Carolinas Rehabilitation – Northeast Hospital on Thursday, July 11.  The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.

Crystal was paralyzed during back surgery several years ago. She is ineligible for a power wheelchair from Medicaid until 2016 and her current manual wheelchair did not provide the support or independence she needed.

The wheelchair donation by the Darrell Gwynn Foundation will not only give her the gift of mobility, but will allow her to become more involved in her 11 year-old son’s life and participate in his activities.

The wheelchair was presented by NASCAR Driver Joey Coulter, Driver of the No. 18 Darrell Gwynn Foundation Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports. Crystal and her family are huge NASCAR fans and fans of Joey Coulter and were thrilled with the chance to meet him.

“I really can never say enough words to thank the Darrell Gwynn Foundation for this gift,” said Sharar. “I get my life back today and I get to leave the house and be a part of my son’s life now. “

“This is such a thrill for my son and I to meet Joey [Coulter],” said Sharar. “I can tell you we will be cheering for the No. 18 truck in NASCAR forever after today. He’s such a great person and knowing he supports the Darrell Gwynn Foundation makes him really special.”

Crystal was referred to DGF by Carolinas Rehab. She is the second patient to receive a donation by the Darrell Gwynn Foundation from Carolinas Rehab. DGF is proud to support the hospital’s grand opening of its newest rehab center that will serve patients recovering from spinal cord injuries.

The wheelchair donation was made through the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s national Wheelchair Donation Program which provides custom power wheelchairs to individuals facing medical and financial hardships. For more information please visit www.darrellgwynnfoundation.org.
