Coulter did just that, persevering through downpours, to bring his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Tempest Cycles, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet home sixth.

The first of two ARCA road course races this year, PBIR opened their gates on Friday (2/26/10), giving the teams a three hour practice session to dial their cars in. As the session ended, Coulter would post the sixth fastest time of the day at 79.316 seconds with a speed of 91.820 MPH. The team would then, immediately get the car ready for the afternoon qualifying session. Coulter would go out second in the second group of five cars. He would qualify ninth for the Tire Kingdom 150 with a time of 79.804 seconds and a speed of 91.259 MPH.

“I felt we were right where we needed to be in practice, the car felt dialed in and griped the track well,” commented Coulter. “I gave it my all in qualifying and came up a little bit short, but am still happy with a top-ten starting spot. My guys have worked really hard and I know we will be in contention tomorrow.”

With rain on everyone’s mind and radars Saturday afternoon, ARCA waved the green flag over the 34 car field just after 1 PM. Coulter quickly moved his way to the front, as a lap one turn one incident among the top cars allowed him to go from ninth to third. He would remain in third, gaining valuable ground on the 2.034 mile 11-turn road course, towards the leader.

A lap six full course caution would bring the field back together. Coulter radioed to crew chief Harold Holly that the “car felt good through the turns, but the rear grip off was lacking.” Holly took note and would fix the cars grip during the first pit stop later in the race. Coulter came back to the green in third, with sprinkles hitting the track on and off.

Rain and slick racing tires do not mix, forcing Coulter to slow his pace around the tight corners. He would find himself in the fifth spot for most of the green flag run. Down pouring rain hit the track on lap 18, forcing ARCA officials to throw a full course yellow on lap 20. Coulter would use this caution to come down pit road for four fresh Hoosier rain tires and top off with Sunoco fuel.

Hoosier’s rain tires being used, marked the first time in ARCA’s 58-year history they would race in the rain. Coulter would again take the green flag, this time in the fourth position. Racing in the rain may have been new to most, but Coulter looked like a seasoned veteran, taking care to use speed mixed with caution.

“Racing in the rain was a totally different thing than I was used too, “said Coulter. “It was challenging at first, but once you get a rhythm it becomes kind of fun. I look at it as another learning experience, preparing me for the future.”

The race would remain green, even through another down pour on lap 47. Coulter found himself in fifth, tracking down the cars in front of him every lap. Holly would call Coulter to the pits for one final time on lap 56. This was a scheduled gas stop, where Coulter said the car was neutral.

Just 12 laps after pitting, the skies unleashed and the rain became unbearable. ARCA waved the caution to re-group the field, but the incredible amount of rain falling forced them to call the race five laps short at lap 70. Coulter would cross the line in his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Tempest Cycles, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet in the sixth position.

“Joey (Coulter) did a phenomenal job today,” commented Holly. “For this (PBIR) only being his second road course race and to then throw in the curveball of rain, he did exactly what he needed to do. It was a fun and interesting race and I am proud of Joey and all of my guys.”

Next up for Coulter and his crew is the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 at Salem Speedway on Sunday, April 11, 2010.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (2/21/2010) – ARCA standout Joey Coulter has never considered himself much of a road course racer, however, he feels prepared as ever entering this weekends Tire Kingdom 150 at Palm Beach International Raceway. Preparation that started long before the green flag dropped on the 2010 ARCA season.

Going into his second full season on the ARCA circuit, Coulter knew he had to be prepared for the series two road course visits. Showing the initiative and drive of a veteran racer, Coulter signed himself up for the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance driving in Phoenix, AZ. He knew the skills taught there would translate well to his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Tempest Cycles, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet come race time at Palm Beach.

“Going into the 2010 race season, I knew I needed to be prepared as possible and the road courses proved to be my biggest challenge,” commented Coulter. “I went out to Bondurant in January, knowing they would help me learn the intricacies of the left and right handed turns. It proved very useful, as we tested very well here (PBIR) just a few weeks ago.”

Traveling straight to Palm Beach International Raceway, after the Daytona race, for the ARCA open test was another step in the right direction for Coulter’s learning curve. The team set out to use the February 8th test to hone Coulter’s skills and create an evenly balanced car. But before the test was to ever start, Coulter showed yet another reason why he is considered a top caliber driver. He would walk the 2.034 mile 11-turn course, visualizing every aspect and turn he would soon be making in his No. 16 Chevrolet.

“I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with a lot of talented drivers over my career, and Joey (Coulter) showed veteran prowess at the test by walking that track to physically learn every move he would make,” said Coulter Motorsports Crew Chief Harold Holly. “Between going to Bondurant, and testing earlier in the month, I feel he is more than capable of running up front when we go back for the race. He will definitely be a contender come checkered flag time.”

Coulter and his team left the PBIR test with a renewed sense of valor as he laid down the sixth fastest time of the day at 80.630 seconds at 90.324 MPH. He spent the day learning from and closely trailing numerous road course aces, who were on hand to shake down other team’s cars. Coulter and his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Tempest Cycles, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet are ready to hit the track again this week, as he looks to make PBIR his first ARCA win.

Rightfully so, as the young standout stayed near the top of the boards all week at the famed high-speed oval, turning heads every time he hit the track.

“Daytona Speedweeks this year was truly a thrilling experience,” commented Coulter. “We arrived 110% prepared and unloaded extremely fast and competitive, which made my job that much easier. Going into Saturday evening’s race, I couldn’t have been more pumped up and ready to race.”

Coulter would use the five-hour practice session on Thursday to hone in his No. 16 Rip It Energy Fuel, Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Tempest Cycles Chevrolet around the 2.5-mile superspeedway. ARCA rules mandated the session would be for single car runs only, saving drafting practice for Friday evening’s “happy hour.” This allowed veteran crew chief Harold Holly plenty of time to finesse their rocket ship and prepare it for qualifying the next morning.

As Thursday’s practice session came to a close, Coulter would find himself fourth fastest of the 52 times posted, at 49.488 seconds and 181.862 MPH. This would set the team up for a great qualifying run Friday morning. But before qualifying, Coulter found himself as a guest commentator on arcaracing.com, which allowed him to call out the first 10 qualifiers. After his broadcast stint, Coulter would pilot his No. 16 Rip It hotrod to a third starting spot for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200. He would turn a quick lap of 49.770 seconds at 180.832 MPH.

“Our car was super fast all week and it handled phenomenal,” said Coulter. “Harold (Holly) and the guys did a great job setting this thing up and getting it through practice and qualifying.”

Due to an intense thunderstorm, Friday evening’s “happy hour” was cancelled, allowing no drafting practice before Saturday’s big show. But Coulter was not worried and prepared for the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards season opener.

The green flag would wave over Coulter and his No. 16 Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet, and he immediately set his sights on the front. He would quickly move his way into second place before the completion of the first lap. The caution would soon wave for a lap six wreck, where Coulter would call in that his car was fast throughout the center and pulled on exit. Racing resumed on lap 16, however a slew of cautions would limit any green flag on-track activity, and a subsequent 21 minute, lap 27 red flag put a halt to all on track activity.

When the red was finally lifted and the yellow was shown, crew chief Harold Holly would bring Coulter to the pits for two fresh right-side Hoosier tires and a tank full of Sunoco race fuel. Coulter would restart the race in the eighth position with 31 laps showing on the board.

He would not, however let his restart position deter him as he quickly worked his way through traffic. Within four laps, Coulter passed several cars to find himself in a single car draft in the fourth position. He would remain in fourth, drafting in a single car freight train. A lap 53 caution gave Coulter and Holly and a chance to discuss the cars handling, where Coulter would report a snug feeling behind the car in front of him. Holly had Coulter turn a half-round of front brake in the car, which would almost immediately rectify the situation on the lap 56 restart.

Coulter and his No. 16 Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet stayed in the fourth position until a jolt, from a car behind on lap 65, sent him up the track and into the second groove. Coulter, finding himself alone in the outer line did his best to race against the car running below him. He stayed in the fifth spot, side by side with fourth, until a competitor came up from behind and shoved Coulter sideways and into the grass. Speeding through the wet grass, Coulter managed to keep his car in a straight line and regained control as he got back on the track entering turn one.

The green flag continued to wave, and Coulter found himself trying to regain the now faded draft. On lap 69 he would radio in that he had a left front flat and quickly made his way to the pits for a four-tire stop. After fixing the damage, the crew got the No. 16 back out, now two laps down. Coulter would remain composed and under control as he wrestled his Rip It Energy Fuel, Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Tempest Cycles Chevrolet to the checkered flag in 26th place.

“We got taken out and sent into the grass by a competitor of ours and it is really frustrating,” commented an infuriated Coulter. “We had the best car out there all night and I was just waiting for the right time to make my move. I want to thank Rip It Energy Fuel and my mom and dad for supporting me. I also want to thank Harold (Holly) and all of my guys for working so hard this week. We will be back even stronger at Palm Beach, and I can’t wait to get back racing.”

“For a major national company to come onboard and sponsor Joey (Coulter) and our team (Coulter Motorsports) is not only humbling but a true testament to Joey’s ability,” commented crew chief Harold Holly. “We are ready as ever to get back racing and we know Joey has what it takes to get the job done this year. We are proud to have Rip It Energy Fuel as a sponsor and we look forward to taking them to victory lane in 2010.”

Coulter looks to pick-up right where he left off as he rolls back into Daytona for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200. After finishing his first ARCA season fourth in points, the determined racer and his team headed to the sandy beaches of Daytona for their preseason test December 18-20 2009. After three days of non-stop testing, Coulter would find himself within the top ten every session, averaging 49.858 seconds at 180.52 MPH throughout the weekend.

“Harold (Holly) and I were really pleased with our primary car. Our back-up was a little less consistent but still very good. The primary car was great by itself and really good pulling the line. It seemed like I could pull better than most, so we know the front of the car is getting through the air really good.”

CHANDLER, AZ – Committed, dedicated, attentive and goal-driven are all actions that one could easily infer about ARCA Racing Series standout Joey Coulter. Describing him as ill-prepared however, would not even be close to the truth and he showed just why this past week.

Coulter, understanding the daunting tasks that make up the 2010 ARCA Racing Series schedule, knows he needs to be 110% prepared going into this season. Openly admitting his biggest hardship throughout the 2009 season, road course racing, led the young racer to travel 1,900 miles across country to attend the renowned Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. With two established road course races on the 2010 schedule, West Palm Beach and New Jersey Motorsports Park, Coulter wanted to make sure he could adequately anticipate the left and right turn challenges.

“Last year (2009) in the ARCA Series was truly a great learning experience for me,” commented Coulter. “I attended some of the most challenging tracks across the country and raced against some of the most talented drivers, all while trying to learn as much as possible. Going into the 2010 season I knew the road courses would be my biggest challenge. That made me want to learn them (road courses) inside and out and that is why I choose to learn from the best and attend Bondurant.”

Due to Coulter’s extensive racing background Bondurant placed him in the same program the likes of Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and Dale Jarrett all completed. The three day advanced road racing class was aimed more at teaching Coulter through extensive seat time rather than class time. The program which he completed from January 13-15th was held at Bondurant’s headquarters in Chandler, AZ right outside of Phoenix.

Driving a 2008 Corvette Z51 Coupe, Coulter was immediately put to the grindstone learning the often uncomfortable and awkward heel-toe braking method. Instructor William Hawkins worked closely with Coulter to perfect his sight line driving, shifting patterns and road course etiquette on the Bondurant Road Course. A 1.6 mile, 15 turn course specifically designed by road racing legend Bob Bondurant to properly teach his students the many perils of the sport. After successfully working with Hawkins throughout day one, Coulter would spend the entire second and third days logging laps, learning everything he could on both the Bondurant Road Course and the Firebird West Course.

“To have the opportunity to travel to Bondurant and work one on one with the instructors was honestly one of the coolest things I have gotten to do,” said an ecstatic Coulter after finishing his course. “I learned so much in these past three days and I feel more prepared now for the road races than I ever thought I would. I want to thank William (Hawkins) for working so closely with me and Bob Bondurant for encouraging me at the beginning, I can not wait for the race season to start.”

At the conclusion of day three, Coulter was awarded a diploma of completion for the advanced road-racing course and given his customary grade card, showing he earned a 4.0 on a 5.0 scale. While that may not seem like total satisfaction to some, Tony Stewart was awarded a 4.2 the first time he attended the legendary school. Not only did he leave with a diploma and chance to meet Bob Bondurant, he also earned the respect of his instructors and a new found love of the left and right handed turns that make up road racing.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (December 15, 2009) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Coulter Motorsports Team Release

Less than two weeks ago, Joey Coulter was at the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series banquet as a rookie. He and his No. 16 Coulter Motorsports team now head to the sandy beaches of Daytona poised as ever and ready to reach their goals, this time however without the daunting rookie stripes.

Every year ARCA enters the home stretch of their off-season with a three-day test at the elusive beast that is Daytona International Speedway. This year is no different as the test is scheduled for December 18th-20th 2009. Drivers and teams alike flock from all over the country to get a fix on their racing bug and prepare for the upcoming season. This is a trek 19-year-old ARCA star Joey Coulter has eagerly awaited since the 2009 finale at Rockingham.

Fresh off an outstanding 2009 rookie season, where Coulter finished fourth in series points, earning seven top fives, 13 top tens, two Pole Awards and the coveted Sportsman of the Year Award, the Miami Springs, Florida native is amped-up to get back on the track. The offseason may be a long awaited time to rest for some, but not for this ARCA standout who lives and breathes racing, and yearns to be on the track.

“2009 was a great learning experience, not only for myself but my whole team (Coulter Motorsports) and we had an amazing time along the way,” commented Joey Coulter. “We accomplished a lot and earned everyone’s respect and, at this level of racing, that is very important. I cannot explain how excited I am to get back racing at the Daytona test and in 2010. I would like to thank my Mom, Dad, and team for making all of this possible.”

The rookie driver proved himself continually on and off the track in 2009. Under the veteran leadership of Crew Chief Harold Holly the team was a threat week in and week out. Coulter would go on to earn career best finishes of second at Mansfield Motorsports Park and Toledo Speedway, while leading 156 laps throughout the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series Season.

“Joey (Coulter) is truly a remarkable young race car driver and it has been my privilege to work with him thus far,” said Coulter Motorsports Crew Chief Harold Holly. “His car control and feedback are on par with any veteran racing today, and he has continually proven he is poised for victory lane. I, along with the entire team, am looking forward to getting back racing at the Daytona test. We are 100% prepared this year and are ready to show everyone we mean business!”

Not only did Coulter’s clean driving and exceptional car control earn him respect on the track in 2009, it also earned him the admiration of his peers and ARCA off the track. The prestigious Sportsman of the Year Award that Coulter earned has never in the 57 years of ARCA been awarded to a series rookie.

As Coulter and his team head down I-95 South towards Daytona, everyone is ready to watch the talented young racer hit the track. The No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation/Tempest Cycles Chevrolet looks to be atop the speed charts all three days as they ready for the ARCA season opener February 6, 2010. Make sure to tune into live audio/timing and scoring of the ARCA Daytona Test on www.arcaracing.com December 18-20th.
